Describe Types Of House Demolition Methods

Updated: Sep 9, 2023

Demolition is a construction process in which an old and weak structure is brought to ground to make way for a new construction. Every building or a structure has a particular life span and when this life span of the structure is over, then it is no safer for living. House demolition is process in which you require the help of professional demolition contractors as they have the right tools, necessary knowledge, experience and licenses to carry out the complex task efficiently.  The demolition methods can be further categorized into two forms i.e. non-explosive demolition and explosive demolition.

Types Of House Demolition Methods Involved In Non-Explosive Demolition

Non-explosive Demolition

In this method, the demolition of a structure is done with the help of some equipment without the use of any kind of explosive. Equipments used in this method are:

Wrecking Balls:

  • This method is one of the oldest methods of demolition which is used for buildings with greater height up to 6-7 storey. In this method the brute force of the wrecking ball is used to bring the structure down. With the help of a crane the wrecking balls are pulled and swung towards the structure and after that, the steel ball strikes the building forcefully and the part of the building is demolished.

  • The crane operator should be experienced enough to operate such kind of operations perfectly. The force of the heavy steel balls cannot be controlled when released so the use of this method is not recommended in crowded surroundings as the debris can fall anywhere. This method is also noisy, generates lots of dusts and enormous debris which can be difficult to gather.

Bulldozers:

  • Such kind of machines is used to demolish houses which are relatively small in size. Basically the bulldozers are used to remove and transfer the debris to the trucks. The bulldozer operator must be careful and should take care of the surrounding while transferring the debris.

High-reach Excavators:

  • In some tall buildings, demolition of high rises is not possible by using wrecking balls and explosives. In such locations high-reach excavators are extremely useful as they can be useful to demolish building structures within 200 meters.

  • High-reach excavators normally make use of some attachments like- hydraulic hammers and shear attachments to perform the demolition without any hassles.

Types Of House Demolition Methods Involved In Explosive Demolition

Implosion Method:

  • The implosion method of demolition is extremely popular in urban areas where demolition is done by using explosives to bring down the structure within minutes. In this method the main focus is on the support of the building as these supports are removed the structure can fall down easily.

  • The support system of the building which involves the beams, columns, pillars, slabs etc are fixed with explosives and detonated to bring down the structure.

Implosion Methods Are Of Two Types

Collapse of Structure within its Own Footprint:

  • In urban areas it’s very difficult to get a free space and it becomes compulsory to get the building vertically down so that the structure around the building are protected.  In such cases the explosives are fixed at the bottom of the building and on the floors which falls below half the length of a building.

  • Since this type of explosion has to demolish the building at once, therefore, it has to be very heavy. The explosives are detonated in sequential pattern i.e. at first, the upper part of the building gets destroyed and falls upon the lower one and after that, the lower part of the building also gets collapsed and falls on its footprint due to heavy load and force

Sideward Fall:

  • This kind of house demolition method is commonly used in places where there is availability of enough space besides the building. In this method the explosives are fixed on the columns and that too on one particular side in order to make the building fall sideward’s like a tree when detonated.

  • Hence the building falls like a tree to the sideward. In order to control the fall of the building steel cables are attached to the buildings.

House demolition surely brings joy to homeowners as they will be getting a better, bigger and a structurally sound house. But on the other side they will have memories of the old house to cherish for their lifetime.
