For every parent it is a matter of concern when their child is not performing well in academics. Usually they think that the reason is because of the child’s ignorance. But, this should not be the case all the time. In some children the information given to them is not taken and processed by the brain in the right way resulting in some difficulty while reading and writing. This is a common issue in children, known as dyslexia. Children are not able to write and read properly which affects their confidence level as well as their academic grades. Such children may also be affected emotionally when they realize that they are not able to do the work which their friends or classmates are capable of. Though there is no permanent cure for this, due to the advancement in medical fields, effective treatments are available for the same.
Symptoms of dyslexia
The intensity of dyslexia may vary from child to child. Some of the symptoms that you may notice in children with this disability are
Start talking late when compared to other kids.
Find difficult to put words in the correct place.
Find problem in learning the basics of reading and writing.
Issues with recognising the letters in words.
Face difficulty in relating sounds with the respective letters.
Medications for treating dyslexia
There are no medicines available for curing this disability. As this deals with the improper processing of information carried out by the brain, curing is impossible. But a part of dyslexia patients have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), can be cured, which in turn may be helpful in treating dyslexia. Hence, this is a disorder which will remain throughout the child’s life. But, proper and early observation, care and adequate treatment may result in an improvement in the condition.
Techniques that should be followed while educating children with dyslexia
As this is a learning disability issue, changes must be made in educating the child different from the way used for normal kids. Specific techniques and steps must be followed by the teachers for an effective teaching of the kid. The whole process would be effective in a better way if the symptoms are detected at the earliest and appropriate measures are taken accordingly. Teachers should be patient and dedicated while dealing with these kids.
Teachers should accept some techniques for hearing, seeing and feeling, which will help the child’s skill in reading. They should be made to listen to recorded lessons on tape, help them to trace numbers and alphabets using their fingers, also, in pronouncing words in the correct way. All these will improve their ability to read and write in an effective way.
Separate academic plans
For improving the kid’s ability, parents should consult the child’s teacher often and discuss with them about changing the teaching techniques needed for their kid. Inform the teachers and the school authorities about your child’s disability, so that they could take appropriate measures for improving the same. This type of planning is known as Individual Education Plan (IEP). If right treatment is given in the early stage, it will be easy for these kids in performing well in their higher classes. But, if not, they will suffer badly in attaining academic progression.
Role of parents
If you come across any symptoms related to dyslexia, without any delay contact the doctor, because early detection will help make the treatment much easier and effective.
Assist and spend more time with your child in reading out words, stories, and recorded information.
Conduct meeting with your child’s teacher often which will help in improving their skills.
Support and encourage your child to read books, stories and so on which will improve their ability in reading.
Dyslexia may not have a permanent cure, but with early detection, proper care and treatment you can improve your child’s confidence and ability.
