Windows are the paths through which ventilation takes place in your house. They control the wind and sunlight that enters into your rooms. Thus, they need to be taken care of and replaced if damaged. A broken window glass is very common. It is not really difficult to replace the broken glass with the new one. Here are some simple tips that will help you in your task of window glass replacement:
If the window frame is large, then you will have to take it out and place it on a flat surface before you remove the glass.
The broken glass must be removed with a lot of caution. Special gloves are available in the market which can be used for this purpose. Pull out one piece at a time and be careful that you do not hurt yourself.
Remove all putty along with the broken pieces of the glass otherwise it might be difficult to get rid of the tiny pieces of glass. A knife or a chisel might be required for successful completion of this task.
Glazier’s points should also be removed along with the putty. These are small metal triangles which are put into the window frame beneath the putty in order to hold the glass in place.
Now clean the wooden frame from all undulations and rough edges with the help of the chisel so that the new glass can fit properly.
If the frame is old then use a paintbrush to apply a thick coating of linseed oil on it which helps the new putty to last longer.
Apply a layer of putty in the frame in which the new glass is to be set. This is the cushion on which the glass will rest and will also prevent the air from passing between the glass and the frame.
Now that the old putty has been removed and fresh one is placed, the replacement glass can be inserted into the frame. The new glass should be of perfect size and so you need to double check it with the frame and then cut if there is a need. The frame should be just about the fraction of an inch smaller than the window pane in which it is supposed to fit.
Now holding the pane firmly, you need to insert a glazier’s point in each side of the frame to hold the glass in place.
The glazing tool must slide against the glass to prevent breakage. The glazier’s tool can be driven into the wood only with a small push.
Once the putty is free of lumps, you need to take a roll of it and apply it on once corner of the window frame and let the strip in the frame completely surrounding the new glass.
Use a knife or a putty knife in order to spread it out and make it even.
The glazing tool will be required now but it must be clean for the job to be neat. Now you need to apply corner to corner strokes for making the putty layer even and to make sure it is not visible from the other side of the glass. A combination of the scraper and glazer makes the job much easier. Keep doing this till the putty gives a neat and finished appearance.
Use a fine grade of sandpaper to scrape the putty once it is dried.
If the putty manufacturer’s instruction on the box says that you can paint it then apply a couple of strokes of color the same as the window frame, let it dry and you’re done!
