Know About The Standard Fall Restraint Systems

There is an endless number of services provided these days. Many companies provide services that require working on a higher level from the ground. If you are into such kind of service and are working for a company that makes it impossible for you to avoid working at height, then it is important that you know about the fall restraint systems. These systems have been made especially available for those whose working sphere includes providing services at dangerous heights. The restraint system has been made mandatory to provide safe working areas for those who are doing the job.

What are Standard Fall Restraint Systems?

Introduced by Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the standard fall restraint systems refer to a system that protects you from damage in case of an accidental fall from above 6 feet or a greater height while working. There are many types of systems that can be used depending upon the nature of work, the weight of the worker and the height that the worker is working from. Some of them are:

  1. Body Belts are connected and tied up to a strong post or pillar and then put around the worker’s body to lessen the risk of him from having an accidental fall. This can only help in positioning and is unable to arrest from fall.

  2. Full Body Harnesses are used to keep workers from falling from a great height. It is mostly used where the working area is more dangerous and prone to falling.

  3. Elastic and great with movement, rope lanyards are perfect to be used as fall arrest as it offers flexibility. Although shock absorption is very limited.

  4. Chest Harnesses are used to rescue and pull up people from narrow spaces, bins, tanks or ditches. They are also used where the risk of falling down vertically is low.

  5. Suspension belts are mostly used by window cleaners and workers who need to work at a height in a vertical position and also need to adjust and change their position while working.

  6. Cable lanyards are good protection if you are working in a hot environment. But a backup shock absorber is needed.

  7. Rope grabs help to go up and down easily if you are working at a height, and you can lock the lifeline if you have a sudden fall while working.

  8. Web Lanyards are good for preventing shortfalls. If you are working within 2 feet from the ground level, then secure yourself firmly with this.

  9. Safety nets are perfect fall restraint systems as they break a fall from a great height. If you are working at a height which is over 25 feet and the area has no permanent flooring, then using safety nets might be the best and most secure option.

  10. Shock absorbers are important fall restraint systems, as they absorb the maximum shock of falling down from a great height and reduce severe injury risks.

  11. Rails protect from falling down from fixed ladders and surfaces which are more curved than flat.

  12. Retractable Lifelines save a person from an accidental fall by providing good mobility.
