Safety Guidelines for using Bag Lifter

Updated: Apr 13

Big bags, commonly known as Jumbo bags or Bulk bags, are increasingly growing in popularity due to their great versatility. They can be used in many different ways and are able to carry weight a thousand times their own weight. They have proved to be an effective solution for the storage and transportation of various products and materials. The right bag lifting or sack lifting machines are used in the food and agricultural industries.  special kinds of machines and equipment are used to lift these bags and they are commonly known as big bag lifters. They can be a crane, forklift, or hoist. Operating these bag lifters requires a special kind of training and skill that is provided to people assigned for this work. There are different varieties of bag lifting equipment that you can get, and with the lifters, you can surely go for a drastic reduction in heavy or repetitive forms of lifting.

As dealing with big bags is a serious concern, a lot of things need to be considered while lifting and transporting them. Proper safety precautions need to be followed such as knowledge about safety methods for specific big bags, what content they carry, and what type of bag lifter is being used to carry them. Hence, there are certain rules and guidelines that need to be taken care of while lifting big bags.

Safety Guidelines

Below mentioned safety handling guidelines apply to all types of lifters whether it is a crane, forklift, or hoist.

  1. While using any type of bag lifter always make sure that it has sufficient capacity to lift the filled big bags.

  2. Big bags are equipped with lift loops so that a crane or forklift can lift them up from there. So, always make sure that there are no sharp edges or any kind of protrusions in forklift tines or crane hooks. Also, make sure that the size and thickness of crane hooks are of comparable size with lift loops of bags and their edges must round also.

  3. Before suspending big bags on a crane or forklift, do check that lift loops of bags are vertically straight. There should be no twists or knots or overlapping, otherwise lifting them would be difficult and might damage the bag.

  4. Big bags are huge bags and they carry tons of weight, so a lot of risks is involved while carrying them. So, make sure that the person who is operating the bag lifter is well informed about the manufacturer’s instructions.

  1. After lifting the bags, make sure that the forklift mast is held at an appropriate angle and big bags are held close to the mast. You should take care that big bags are neither dragged nor touched by wheels of forklift.

  2. This is a method of portable bag handling that reduces any hassle in the process of production.

  3. There will be a reduction in workplace injury or any kind of illness. This will also result in lower insurance costs.

  4. Lifting and transporting big bags is a responsible task, so only those people who have proper eye-vision should be allowed to operate bag lifters. Also, make sure that the line of sight is clear before moving the big bags and there is no personnel lying in the area.

It is very crucial to factor in all the above-mentioned guidelines while using bag lifters. If you lift big bags by using few lift loops than what is recommended, then it is likely to put stress on bag material and will make the load unstable. This unstable load will result in damage and lead to failure in lifting procedure and might also cause harm to the personnel. So, make sure to well inform all the forklift or crane operators about these safety guidelines to avoid any potential mishap.
